BNSW 2022/23 OPEN GENDER STATE PENNANT FINALS

GRADE 4 STATE CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to our Grade 4 Open Gender Pennant team on claiming the champions flag for the 2022/23 season. A huge achievement to a great group of players – we are so proud of you all and the work you put in on the greens – including those players who contributed along the way and all of the supporters who made the trek to South Tamworth.

Their road to success was a tough one, winning only 2 out of their 3 section games but doing enough to progress through to the quarter final stages:

Round 1 – defeated Warilla 67-39

Round 2 – defeated Cronulla 49-44

Round 3 – defeated by Wenty Leagues 57-54

Their quarter final match up was against Maitland City, coming over the top of them 57-48 which then put them through to the Semi Final. This then saw them up against Young BC who they then defeated with a 65-49 score line.

The pinnacle event, FINAL of the BNSW Open Gender Pennant Finals – up against Wingham BC. It was a tough battle out on the green coming down to the last end to decide the champions. But it was the Saints that came out victorious with a 57-56 win.

Congratulations to all – Wayne Anderson, Graeme Smith, Chelsea McKay, Brett Morgan, Maryann Parcell, Daniel Ford, Ching Li, David Morris, Mick Berwick Jnr, Peter James, Brittany Camp, Flurr Ballard, John Boniface (Reserve), Tony Feraud (Manager).

GRADE 1, GRADE 6 & GRADE 7

Grade 1 made their way up to Forster hoping for a back to back win in the Open Gender State Pennants. The team won all 3 of their section games – Round 1 against Figtree 79-44, Round 2 against Raymond Terrace 62-54 and Round 3 against Warilla 62-29. Winning the section, our Grade 1 side got to the Quarter Finals where they came up against a strong Taren Point Side where they were defeated 74-61.

Grade 6 made their way down to Warilla for the second year in a row. The team won 2 out of their 3 sectional games to progress through to the Quarter Finals – Round 1 defeated by Harrington 77-52, Round 2 defeated Picton 64-56 and Round 3 defeated Bondi 62-59. Their Quarter final match up was Belrose, defeating their side 62-50 which would see them progress through to the Semi Final. This game was a tough one getting match up against the home side of Warilla, where our Saints were narrowly defeated 61-52.

Grade 7 didn’t go too far up the road to Northmead for there quest to win a State Pennant Flag. They won only 1 of their section games, placing them third in the section and unable to progress through to the quarter finals. The side started their campaign off with a tight loss to Nowra 51-63 in Round 1. In round 2 against NBC Sports they had a loss of 48-69 and to round out sectional games in Round 3 they had a great win against Warrawee 66-47.

Once again, congratulations to all of our teams involved in the 2022/23 State Open Gender Pennant Finals. It was a successful year for the Saints and we hope to go bigger and better next year. GO SAINTS!!

Saints are State Champions

St Johns Park are State Pennant champions once again, winning the 2021 BCiB Bowls NSW Open Gender Grade 1 State Pennant 80 – 42 over Engadine. Played in wet conditions at Forster Bowling Club, the Saints jumped out to an early 18 – 1 lead over the Cougars, courtesy of an 11 – 0 start from the Sean Baker skipped rink. From there, they maintained a comfortable buffer throughout the final despite some push back from Engadine. The performance was clinical not only from start to finish, but across all positions, proving that the victory was a true team effort. Engadine did not play badly by any means, they simply came up against a St Johns Park side in red hot form.

In the morning semi-finals, St Johns Park overcame a fast-starting Raymond Terrace outfit to win 59 – 56 in a nailbiter. A 23 – 12 win to Ben Twist’s rink accounted for two narrow losses on the other rinks to see the Saints through to the final. It was a very different story for Engadine, who jumped out to a huge lead against Charlestown and never let up, eventually winning 80 – 33. All three rinks recorded solid wins against their Newcastle based opposition.

Remarkably, both finalists did lose a match during sectional play. St Johns Park were beaten by Mt Lewis in the opening round, and Cabramatta got the better of Engadine in the second round. These matches could have been the catalyst that sparked both sides into form, as they continued to improve as the competition went on.

Ultimately though, there can only be one winner, and St Johns Park were deserving of the title. A special mention must also go to Dawn Hayman, who has become the first woman in history to win the Bowls NSW Open Gender Grade 1 State Pennant Final! Congratulations to all sides today, and to all the sides who have competed over the last three days in the Open Gender State Pennant Finals.

SJP Bowls Update

Dear Bowling Members,

We hope this finds you all well and looking after yourselves, family and friends in this difficult time.

There were a number of changes to the Bowls NSW Calendar that has impacted our bowling activities. Below is a summary and we encourage you to read the complete release for more information.

State Pennant Finals – Further Changes

Dates of play for Grade 1 and Grade 4 have been revised again. The new playing dates are Friday 15th – Sunday 17th October. Grade 1 are still playing in Forster, however, Grade 4 has been moved to Dubbo.

Grade 1 – Accommodation booked in Forster for Players and Manager (Thursday 14th – Monday 18th). All transport arrangements have also been confirmed.

Grade 4 – The Club have secured accommodation for Players and Manager (Thursday 14th – Monday 18th). Transport via Coach has also been confirmed.

There are still a number of concerns over the COVID restrictions that will be in place at the time of the State Pennant Finals. Therefore, we have secured the necessary arrangements for players and managers only. If there are opportunities at a later date for spectators to attend, we may be able to investigate further options, however at this point, we believe this will be unlikely.

NSW State Championships – CANCELLED

NSW Over 40’s Pairs Championship – CANCELLED

Women’s Champion of Club Champion Singles – RESCHEDULED DATES CONFIRMED

The 2021 Women’s Champion of Club Champion Singles will now take place from 23rd – 26th November at Port City and Lake Cathie Bowling Clubs.

Women’s Champion of Club Champion Pairs – RUNNING AS SCHEDULED

The 2021 Champion of Club Champion Pairs will run as scheduled from 18th – 21st November at Club Merrylands and Guildford Bowling Club. The entry closing date has been extended to 25th October 2021.

Men’s Champion of Club Champion Singles & Pairs – RUNNING AS SCHEDULED

The 2021 Men’s Champion of Club Champion Singles and Pairs will run as scheduled from 22nd – 26th November at South Tamworth Bowling Club. 

NSW Rookies Singles & Pairs – RUNNING AS SCHEDULED

The 2021 NSW Rookies Singles and Pairs Competition will run as scheduled on the following dates:

  • Rookie Pairs Qualifying: 30th – 31st October
  • Rookie Singles Qualifying: 13th – 14th November
  • Rookie Pairs and Singles State Finals: 4th – 5th December

The entry closing date for this event is 20th September 2021, and the State Finals will be hosted by Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

State Junior Championships – RUNNING AS SCHEDULED

The 2021 State Junior Championships will run as scheduled from 25th – 28th September at Warilla Bowling and Recreation Club.

Round 10 Sides Released

The sides have been announced for the final Round of Pennants, this includes the Grade One fixture versus Mount Lewis on Sunday Morning, 16th May, at 9:30am. All other matches will be held on Saturday 15th May. This week’s fixtures include:

  • Grade 1 vs Mount Lewis (Home) – Sunday 16th May, 9:30am Start.
  • Grade 2 vs Bye
  • Grade 3 vs Bye
  • Grade 4 vs Moxon Sports (Away)
  • Grade 5 vs Bye

Please confirm your availability at the bowls office, or tick your name off on the board in the Powerhouse.

Pennant training for all grades is on Wednesday at 6:00pm. Selectors are available for discussion with players from 5:00pm-6:00pm on Wednesdays before Pennant Training should any player wish to discuss their selection.

Round 9 Sides Released

The sides have been announced for Round 9 of Pennants, this includes the Grade One Friday Night fixture versus Mona Vale. All other matches will be held on Saturday 8th May. This week’s fixtures include:

  • Grade 1 vs Mona Vale (Home) – Friday 7th May at 5:30pm.

Pennant Teams Announced

The Pennant Teams have been picked for Round 6 (Grades 2 – 7) and Rounds 3 & 4 (Grade 1) for this upcoming weekend.

Our 1’s team kicked their campaign off last weekend with a win over reigning premiers, and arch rivals, Cabramatta, before sneaking over the line with a 1 shot victory over the strong Engadine outfit.

They will travel to Taren Point On Friday April 16 to play Taren Point at 5:30 pm, before a morning fixture the next day v Merrylands at SJP.
