Ben Twist headlined ‘Finals Day’ at St Johns Park Bowling Club claiming two Club Championships in the one day and taking his 2021 Championship tally to three.
Singles Final
The first match was an absolute cracker in the Singles Final. Twist took the match 31-28 over his opponent and long time friend Chris Herden. It was a phenomenal match that went the distance with both bowlers playing some outstanding bowls and showing great comradery.
Having taken an early advantage 16-8, Herden saw his lead diminish when the scores were locked up 21-all. From there, Twist took control, nudging ahead, eventually taking the victory and his first Singles Championship at the Club.
Pairs Final
There was not significant time for celebrating the victory, as Twist teamed up with Josh Berry in the Pairs Final. Their opponents for the occasion were Karl Dempsey and Ching Li, who seemed to cruise to the final with three convincing wins in their previous rounds.
Berry and Twist on the other hand needed victories over last years winners Mathew Pietersen and Mark Berghofer and a tight victory over Bryce Billington and Gerard Short 22-21 to progress to this years final.
It was tight contest over the first eight ends, with the scores locked up at 8-all (lucky for some). It was the class of Berry and Twist that took the game away from their opponents, dropping only two ends for the remainder of the match. The Pairs Championship was completed in convincing fashion, a 26-11 win, with Berry and Twist etching their names in the SJP history books once again – their fifth Major Pairs title together.
A huge congratulations to all players that featured in the Singles and Pairs Championships this year. They were greatly contested championships played in the ‘Saints’ spirit.
